IMEMS is managed on a day to day basis by its Director, Professor Helen Wilcox (English, Bangor); aided by the Deputy Director, Professor Diane Watt (English, Aberystwyth) and the staff of the Research and Enterprise Partnership office.

Policy is set by the IMEMS Management Board. This consists of the Director, the Deputy Director, the Head of the Aberystwyth and Bangor Partnership, the Pro Vice Chancellors for Research at Aberystwyth and Bangor, and two other representatives – currently Professor Thomas Corns (Bangor, English); and Dr David Ceri Jones (History, Aberystwyth).

The Management Board meets every other month and formally consults the leaders of its strands and projects at least three times a year.  There is an annual meeting of all members each Spring.

IMEMS has an international advisory board chaired by Professor Lori Anne Ferrell of the Claremont Graduate University and includes, Professor Ann Hughes, Keele University; Professor Catherine McKenna, Harvard University; Professor Clare Lees, King's College London; Professor Dafydd Johnson, Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies and Professor Philippe Vendrix, Université François-Rabelais de Tours.
