Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS)
This international research network links IMEMS with the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Trinity College, Dublin. Established in 2006, this network brings together scholars, students and independent researchers who are investigating aspects of war and conflict resolution from the early middle ages to the early eighteenth century. The network is strongly interdisciplinary, and welcomes anyone with an interest in examining the implications of cultural violence and disseminating findings in an academic forum.
Initial areas of interest are listed below: but they are not exclusive, and the network hosts discussion and projects on any aspect of war and conflict resolution in the pre-modern world which would benefit from cross disciplinary study. The fields listed here are intended as crystallising points for clusters of scholars, whose members define the most urgent questions and formulate activities to answer them.
Since the inaugural conference at Gregynog Hall (Inaugural conference of the ‘Cultures of War’ network), the network has met twice yearly in one day conferences; past venues include Trinity College, Dublin, Shefield, Warwick and Kings College, London. Meetings are planned for the coming year in Reading and Lancaster, and plans are underway for the first North American meeting in the near future. The network has a mailing list of about 70 members and is coordinated by Dr Sarah Alyn-Stacey at Trinity College, Dublin. Scholars interested in getting involved in this group should contact Dr Andrew Hiscock (els408@bangor.ac.uk).
