CREaM: Centre for Research in Early Music

CREaM acts as a focal point for the extraordinarily high numbers of scholars in Bangor who are leaders in research on music before 1700: perhaps the highest concentration of such experts in the UK. Particular strengths include source studies, editing, musical instruments and sacred music: through CREaM aims to use its participation in IMEMS to spread beyond its own specialisms to engage in cross-disciplinary study with colleagues from other departments in Aberystwyth and Bangor, and to lead research in early music worldwide.

The range of expertise in CREaM makes it particularly attractive for post-graduate study in the field of early music; and this can be undertaken in the increasingly rich context of the graduate school of the College of Arts and Humanities in Bangor. CREaM is also undertaking or planning a series of research projects and conferences – these include hosting the Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference in 2008, investigating early music in Wales, reconstructing Renaissance organs, digitising music manuscripts, constructing an online motet database, and editing the works of Henry Purcell. CREaM collaborates with the Centre for Advanced Welsh Music Studies (CAWMS); and the International Centre for Sacred Music (ICSMus), whilst individual projects involve co-operation with a number of other bodies across the UK, Europe and the World.
